Quest for a New Land - The Royalty Contest by Hewison Quest for a New Land - The Royalty Contest by Hewison
My entry for :iconponies-for-everypony:'s "The Royalty Contest" [link]

Snow. Lots of snow.
This took surprisingly less time than I expected.

The black silhouette from Ponies-For-Everpony's icon, that needed to be included in the image as part of the rules, is in two places. Sneakily it is in bottom right corner, in the background as a bush, but also as a light through the clouds type thing. I don't really know what the thinking behind that was. Originally I had planned for the icon in the sky to be subtle, and the bush to be more noticeable. Funny how things turn out sometimes.

Edit: Featured in EQD's Drawfriend Stuff #648! Thank you to everyone for the kind words, favs and views. It is all greatly appreciated, really, it is. Cheers!

That snow seems not like snow at all to me, but i like it, it's really unique (mostly because of the perspective used) and well executed. :)

More like a kind of fog, or scratched old photo, or maybe styrofoam pieces...?
Yeah, pretty much like that.

Aye, I see what you mean. I was trying to make it look like it was so blizzardy that you couldn't see behind the ponies. The way I went about this, was pretty much the same way I go about to adding fog/smoke. I'll keep that in mind for when I next do something snowy, cheers.

Wow, this is amazing. The snow is in front as well as behind the two ponies and it blends in well. I've seen a lot of horrific-looking snow, but the snow in this one is pretty good. You know art is good when it feels "real". This definitely feels real.

Aye, I've seen and produced my fair share of horrific-looking snow myself. It's nice when a plan comes together... eventually. Thanks for the kind words!

Amazing, an instant favourite. The colours match well. The snow effect looks genuinely cold. The layout is interesting. It is as if you had these ponies in front of you and did a live portrait.

Thank you. I'd like to say it would of been awesome if this was indeed a live portrait... but I've drawn outside in the snow before. One of the few postive things from that experience, was that it was atleast, very pretty.

My goodness, this is amazing! I love the subtlety of the pencil sketch underneath the soft, watercolor-like coloring. The contrast between the crisp lines of the foreground and the muffled canopy of the background is wonderful, and the snowy texturing turned out just perfect! I'm a bit curious as to how much of this piece was traditional and how much was done on a computer...
The one thing that stands out to me personally is that I would imagine Princess Platinum's mane to be a bit more windblown, and she would be reacting to the wind and snow a bit more like Clover the Clever is. Other than that, though, this is beautiful, and the best of luck to you in the contest!

Thank you very much for the kind words and critique! It means a lot to me and is greatly appreciated, thanks!

To answer your question on how much of this piece was traditional, and how much was done on a computer... well, hmmm. I want to say that it was mostly done on a computer, but I feel that saying that undermines the work involved in the original pencil sketch. I love pencil sketches, or any kind of sketch really. I'm derailing myself, my bad. Simply put, the only traditional element here is the pencil sketch. All the rest was done via digital means.

Now that you mention it, yeah, Princess Platinum's hair should be a bit more windblown. I shall attempt a BS excuse: Princess Platinum is thick with mane(hair) products that make it super smooth, shiny, and sturdy! I had something like that in mind while drawing this, I think.

Thanks again!
